Dr. Katz and TyroneGreat Article For Final Week Of Responsible Animal Guardian Month

IDA is the featured organization this month on the Action Now! Network, so we'd like to share this wonderful feature on the A.N.N website about IDA and our founder, Dr. Elliot M. Katz. As we bring "Responsible Animal Guardian Month” to a close, we invite you to learn all about IDA's beginnings and the promise of our Guardian Campaign to change the concept of "animal" from a "thing" that humans control and dominate to a sentient being who deserves to be treated responsibly, with compassion and respect. As Dr. Katz says in the article, "In addition to all the thousands of lives that IDA has saved, if I have had some small part in a paradigm shift as to how we relate to other species, then I will feel I have lived a life worth living." Lily Tomlin, Jenny, Dallas ZooLily Tomlin Speaks Up For Bronx Zoo Elephants

Following the announcement that the Bronx Zoo in New York faces severe funding cuts, actor Lily Tomlin sent a letter this week urging the zoo to send its three elephants – Happy, Patty and Maxine – to a spacious, natural-habitat sanctuary. In her letter, Tomlin cited the threatened budget crunch and unnatural conditions for elephants, including cramped exhibit space and frigid weather that forces them indoors throughout the winter, as reasons for the move. Elephants are the most expensive animals to maintain in a zoo, at an annual cost of up to $200,000 each, so sending Maxine, Patty and Happy to a sanctuary – at no cost to the zoo – would also help save precious resources.

Bronx Zoo elephantsThe Bronx Zoo announced in 2006 that it would phase out its elephant program after the deaths of one or two elephants and instead steer funding directly into conserving elephants in Africa and Asia. Rather than wait until an elephant dies, the zoo should send Maxine, Patty and Happy to a sanctuary now, where they would have room to roam, a warmer climate, and the companionship of other Asian elephants.

The elephants – all captured in the wild – have spent more than 34 years on display at the Bronx Zoo.

What you can do:

1. Click here to send a message to the Bronx Zoo saying that Lily Tomlin is right! The elephants should be sent to a sanctuary now.

2. Send a letter to the editor of the New York Times, Newsday, NY Daily News, and NY Post, saying the Bronx Zoo should retire the elephants now.

Doll Stanley and dog rescued from hoarderIDA Rescues 13 Dogs And 3 Cats In Mississippi

On May 16, IDA and the Carroll County, Mississippi Sheriff’s Department began seizing 13 dogs and 3 cats from a dilapidated home. After confirming reports of horribly neglected animals, a judge issued a seizure order with IDA’s Hope Animal Sanctuary acting as the humane agent for the Sheriff’s Department.

The dogs suffered Sarcoptic mange, heartworms, internal parasites, ticks, fleas, Parvo, and had grossly overgrown toenails and sores on the pads of their feet. Two kittens suffering from advanced upper respiratory disease and a thin elderly cat found in the yard suffering urinary tract distress were also rescued from the property. Forks Over Knives movie logoRoger Ebert Says New Film "Forks Over Knives" Could Save Your Life

Film critic Roger Ebert has written a great review of the new documentary "Forks Over Knives." Here are two excerpts from Ebert:

"Forks Over Knives" is a documentary in which Lee Fulkerson enacts a mirror image of the journey taken by Morgan Spurlock in "Supersize Me." Instead of eating only at McDonald's for a month and nearly killing himself, he eats a plant-based whole food diet for six months, gets off all of his cholesterol and blood pressure medications, drops a lot of weight, sleeps better and has more energy." ... and ... "What every human being should do is eat a vegetarian diet based on whole foods. Period. That's it. Animal protein is bad for you. Dairy is bad for you. Forget the ads: Milk and eggs are bad for you. Skim milk is no better, because it contains proportionately more animal protein." Click here to visit rogerebert.com to read the rest of the review, then go see this movie!

Fwd: Death Sentence for Idaho Pups

From: Suzanne Stone, Defenders of Wildlife <defenders@mail.defenders.org>

Subject: Death Sentence for Idaho Pups

Save America's Wolves

Dear Wildlife Supporter,

Even as Idaho's wolf families try to raise their newborn pups, state officials are issuing death warrants for these amazing animals.

They're calling on federal wildlife killers -- and now even local law enforcement -- to kill dozens of wolves living in the wilds of Idaho.

Please donate now to save America's wolves and support our fight against an anti-wolf extremist agenda.

It's a biological fact: Wolves feed on elk and other wildlife to survive. But Idaho officials are siding with anti-wolf extremists who want to disturb the natural balance of wilderness to artificially boost elk populations -- right in the middle of denning season.

Targeting wolf families at the height of denning season is a virtual death sentence for newborn pups -- the most vulnerable members of the pack.

Please donate today to help protect wolf pups and other wildlife.

In just over three weeks since federal protections were lifted from wolves in the Northern Rockies, Idaho officials have already called in Wildlife Services -- the federal wildlife-killing program -- to track down wolves with radio collars and shoot them from helicopters.

Now they're authorizing more killing this spring. They're even allowing local sheriffs and their deputies to take out an entire pack of wolves in the central part of the state.

Please support our work to protect the lives of Idaho wolves and ensure a lasting future for these amazing animals.

Your generous support will help Defenders...

  • Fight extreme, anti-wolf rhetoric with solid scientific principles, public education and the voices of those who want wolves as part our living, natural heritage;
  • Fight extremist legislation in Congress that threatens the future of wolves in the U.S.;
  • Help reform Wildlife Services into a program that works to help people and wildlife coexist peacefully, rather than just killing thousands of wolves and other wild animals;
  • Help keep wolves and livestock out of harm's way with our pioneering, non-lethal coexistence programs; and
  • Promote other vital efforts to save wolves and other wildlife struggling to survive.

For more than 35 years, Defenders has been a leader in the fight to restore wolves to their rightful place in the American landscape. We're not about to give up the fight just as these magnificent animals struggle to expand to their historic range beyond Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

But our wildlife-saving work isn't possible without the generous support of people like you. Will you donate today for our wolves and other wildlife?

This Memorial Day remember those lost in the past year
Dear Anne,

For almost 150 years, Memorial Day has served as a national day of remembrance—a day to reflect on the lives of those lost. For the last 30 of those years, PETA has led the fight to stop animal abuse and save animals' lives.

As you pause this Memorial Day to remember those who have passed away, we'd like to ask you to think also of the animals who were not able to be saved—particularly those who have perished over this past year.

Please consider making a donation in memory of these animals—whether you're thinking of the young seal pups clubbed for their fur, the beagles killed after months of painful experiments, the calves who were taken away from their mothers and slaughtered before their first birthday, or the countless other animals who perished because of abuse, neglect, or human greed. Here are a just few of the others whom we've lost:
Knut Kalina Daisy
Knut, the polar bear cub who was the toast of the Berlin Zoo four short years ago, died this year at the young age of 4 after living in constant stress in an enclosure a fraction of the size of his natural home range. Kalina, the first orca to be born and raised in captivity at SeaWorld, died after spending all 25 years of her life in a barren concrete pool rather than the freedom of the sea. Daisy was a sweet pit bull who froze to death in the frigid January temperatures when the chain she was attached to prevented her from reaching any shelter.
Animal #28765 Rue McClanahan Create Your Own
Each year, millions of cats, dogs, primates, mice, rats, rabbits, and other animals suffer and die in painful animal tests. Rue was one of PETA's first champions for animals in Hollywood, joining PETA only a few short years after our founding and helping to establish us as a leader in the fight for animal rights. Create your own True Friends Memorial page to share the memory of your loved one.

Thank you for your remembrance of all animals this Memorial Day.

Sincerely,

Your Friends at PETA
