Stop Cruel And Unsafe Elephant Training Methods In Zoos

IDA has asked the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to end the use of circus-style “free contact” elephant management in zoos, as a matter of employee safety. OSHA is the main federal agency charged with enforcement of health and safety regulations in the workplace.

Free contact management relies on negative reinforcement and use of the bullhook, a device similar to a fireplace poker that is used to jab, hook, strike and threaten elephants into obedience with commands. IDA is urging OSHA to ban this practice in favor of the more progressive and humane protected contact system that uses only positive reinforcement training and places a protective barrier between keepers and elephants. New Hope For Traveling Elephants - USDA Creates Monitoring Team

IDA has been very critical of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) weak inspection and enforcement actions regarding elephants in traveling shows. And thousands of our supporters have repeatedly expressed outrage over the agency’s failure to protect elephants who have been routinely subjected to abuse, neglect and life-threatening conditions.

We are pleased to report that the USDA has received the message loud and clear that elephants need greater protection. The agency recently announced the formation of a special team of veterinarians to inspect traveling elephant exhibitors throughout the country.

IDA applauds the USDA for the formation of this special team, which brings hope that elephants in traveling shows will be more closely watched and their exhibitors held accountable for following AWA requirements. Click here to read more including the USDA announcement.

Here’s 3 easy ways to help with World Go Vegan Week: 

1) Host an event for World Go Vegan Week - Help educate your community about the suffering of farmed animals and the benefits of a plant-based diet. You can pass out fliers, hold a demo or host a vegan Halloween Party! We'll provide materials and support. Register your event with hope@idausa.org. 

2) Take our Vegan Pledge - Not quite all-the-way vegan just yet? Give vegan a try, just for a week - sign the pledge and go vegan for World Go Vegan Week - October 24 – 31.

3) Donate to our Climate Campaign “Green Your Plate, Green the Planet” - IDA has partnered with the Veg Climate Alliance, FARM, A Well Fed World and others to draw attention to the global warming impact of meat, dairy and eggs. Our focus is on the United Nations Climate Conference in Cancun, Mexico, and we need funding for this important campaign. IDA's Hope Animal Sanctuary Rescues Another 65 Dogs And 5 Cats

Hope Animal Sanctuary Director Doll Stanley and volunteer Debbie McCool transported 65 dogs and 5 cats from IDA’s Hope Animal Sanctuary to Every Creature Counts in Ft. Lupton, Colorado.

This was our second trip to ECC in as many months. The last transport brought nearly 60 dogs to ECC – all but one of whom has since been adopted. Click here to read more and leave comments on our blog.
